Please keep these threads related to graphic novel art, sketches, layouts, character designs, turnarounds, etc. There are plenty of other forums to post completely random artwork. Lets keep this one focused on the creation of making a graphic novel.

Hello all,

Here's a few style tests for a possible, upcoming project:

The textures seem a bit grainy, though that may be an issue with print vs. web resolutions.

I would discourage you from using stock geometrically patterned textures on curved objects (such as the headrests on the couch), as it makes them look very flat. Especially when the pattern is so bold as to be nearly black and white. I would suggest either using a tool to deform the pattern to match the curvature of the headrest, using a subtler pattern, or just doing the pattern by hand instead.

The way the elevator cable extends from the second to the first panel is also somewhat visually confusing, the more so because it seems to join up with (or originate from) a presumably unrelated line in that panel.

I definitely agree with Arioch's comment about the tangent with that tether cable. What's more it looks like it's severing that guy's wrist.

Regarding deforming the zip-tones, maybe it's because I've been reading manga for years but it doesn't bother me that much as it's a very common technique to use flat patterns in Manga.

I think these look really good. You're pushing the conventional boundaries of comics and that's a good thing. We must not limit ourselves to following the same rules and styles if we wish to make any progress. Keep up the good work and I'd love to see more of this if it still exists.

Hello again,

Thanks for the critiques, compliments and interest. It does indeed appear that the poor man's wrist is being severed. And to think, he just wanted a sip of coffee. As for the textures, that technique is definitely influenced by manga; particularly early manga by Osamu Tezuka. If any one is interested, I'm going to make an official post for this project by the end of next week in the Show & Tell board. There will be some info on what it's all about and a bunch of sketches with a page or two to follow shortly thereafter.
